Tom grew up in a small town. His family knew most of the people in the town. As a young man Tom hated being there. There was never anything to do in this town.
When he turned 22, Tom packed up and with bright eyes he went to live in the city. He got a job in an office building. He went to bars and restaurants. He had an apartment in a complex with more people in the building than there was in his small home town.
Tom lived in the city for 20 years. He started hating the city. It was too crowded. There was a lot of noise, his neighbor was a drug dealer. The traffic was horrible. He felt lonely. He made friends but nobody ever stuck around. They were always busy. He met a few girls and they too left him in the end.
One night he sat at a bar alone. He stared through the TV screen. People walked by him all night and no one ever said, "Hi" like they do in his hometown. He went home alone and slept restlessly.
Two weeks later Tom gave the landlord his notice and moved back to his small home town. His small town was now a big town. His friends all grew up, got married, had kids, and moved away. Tom felt alone in his small town.
